Foto LinkMichael Sanderling has served as Chief Conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra since 2021. His appointment followed a long-standing, successful collaboration, with the shared aim of further developing the orchestra’s focus on late Romantic repertoire, including works by Bruckner, Mahler, and Strauss.
…Under his leadership, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra has embarked on tours across Asia, South America, and Europe. A highlight was their performance of Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony at the Vienna Konzerthaus, accompanied by William Kentridge’s animated film Oh to Believe in Another World. This impressive production was first premiered at the KKL Lucerne and the Pompeii Theatrum Mundi Festival, and was later presented again at the MiTo Festival in Milan and at the Philharmonie de Paris.
Since the beginning of his tenure, several acclaimed recordings have been released, notably a Brahms cycle in 2023 with Warner Classics, featuring the four symphonies and the piano quartet orchestrated by Arnold Schoenberg. Additionally, recordings of Mozart’s and Fazıl Say’s Requiems with the Berlin Radio Choir have been produced.
As a guest conductor, Michael Sanderling leads renowned orchestras worldwide, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra London, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra.
From 2011 to 2019, he was Chief Conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic, elevating the orchestra’s profile through performances in Dresden and international tours. During this period, he recorded the complete symphonies of Beethoven and Shostakovich for Sony Classical. Prior to this, he served as Chief Conductor of the Kammerakademie Potsdam from 2006 to 2011.
In addition to the recordings mentioned above, Michael Sanderling’s extensive discography includes recordings of major works by Dvořák, Schumann, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky, as well as works for cello and orchestra by Bloch, Korngold, Bruch and Ravel with Edgar Moreau and the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester.
In 2011, he conducted a new production of Sergei Prokofiev’s War and Peace at the Cologne Opera, earning him the title of “Conductor of the Year” from Opernwelt magazine.
Michael Sanderling is deeply committed to nurturing young musical talent. He teaches at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts and collaborates regularly with the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra. From 2003 to 2013, he was Chief Conductor of the Deutsche Streicherphilharmonie.

Foto LINKSeit 2021 ist Michael Sanderling Chefdirigent des Luzerner Sinfonieorchesters – eine Ernennung, die auf eine langjährige, erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit zurückgeht und dem gemeinsamen Ziel folgt, das Orchester im spätromantischen Repertoire – insbesondere mit Werken von Bruckner, Mahler und Strauss – weiterzuentwickeln.
…Unter der Leitung von Michael Sanderling unternahm das Luzerner Sinfonieorchester Gastspielreisen nach Asien, Südamerika und Europa. Weitreichende Beachtung fand dabei die Aufführung von Schostakowitschs 10. Sinfonie im Wiener Konzerthaus – begleitet von William Kentridges Animationsfilm ‘Oh to Believe in Another World’. Diese eindrucksvolle Produktion wurde zunächst im KKL Luzern und beim Festival Pompeji Theatrum Mundi uraufgeführt und später beim MiTo Festival in Mailand sowie in der Philharmonie de Paris erneut präsentiert.
Seit Beginn seiner Tätigkeit als Chefdirigent entstanden unter Michael Sanderlings Leitung mit dem Luzerner Sinfonieorchester mehrere vielbeachtete CD-Produktionen bei Warner Classics – darunter der Brahms-Zyklus mit den vier Sinfonien sowie dem von Arnold Schönberg orchestrierten Klavierquartett, ebenso wie die Requiems von Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart und Fazıl Say in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Rundfunkchor Berlin.Als Gastdirigent leitet Michael Sanderling renommierte Orchester weltweit, darunter die Berliner Philharmoniker, das Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, das Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, das Orchestre de Paris, das NHK Symphony Orchestra, das Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, das Philharmonia Orchestra London, das Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, die Wiener Symphoniker, das Dallas Symphony Orchestra, das Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra und das Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra.
Von 2011 bis 2019 prägte Michael Sanderling als Chefdirigent die Dresdner Philharmonie und profilierte das Orchester zu einem der führenden Klangkörper Deutschlands. Gemeinsame Konzertformate in Dresden und zahlreiche internationale Tourneen wurden durch die Einspielungen sämtlicher Sinfonien von Beethoven und Schostakowitsch für Sony Classical dokumentiert. Dieser Position war von 2006 bis 2011 die künstlerische Leitung der Kammerakademie Potsdam als Chefdirigent vorausgegangen.
Michael Sanderlings umfangreiche Diskografie umfasst neben den oben genannten Einspielungen auch bedeutende Werke von Dvořák, Schumann, Prokofjew und Tschaikowsky – darunter Aufnahmen von Kompositionen für Violoncello und Orchester von Bloch, Korngold, Bruch und Ravel mit Edgar Moreau sowie die Brahmsschen Klavierkonzerte mit Elisabeth Leonskaja und dem Luzerner Sinfonieorchester.
Im Jahr 2011 leitete er die Neuproduktion von Sergej Prokofjews «Krieg und Frieden» an der Oper Köln, für die er von der Zeitschrift «Opernwelt» zum Dirigenten des Jahres gewählt wurde.
Michael Sanderling engagiert sich leidenschaftlich für die Förderung der musikalischen Jugend. Neben seiner Lehrtätigkeit an der Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main arbeitet er regelmässig mit dem Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchester zusammen. Von 2003 bis 2013 war er Chefdirigent des Jugendorchesters Deutsche Streicherphilharmonie.
